National Talkblack 121119

On todays National Talkblack via NIRS – NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we had:

Aaron Smith – Editor from Cape and Torres news giving us some updates on VMR (Volunteer Marine Rescue) vessels in our different communities. Torres have 3 VMRs but are all in poor conditions due to the weather and not being housed properly. These vessels are strategic in our communities which are required for rescue missions. Uncle Edgar Williams a service man in the second World War has only just received his medals. Fires storms across the nation are still burning up the top and also around Australia with climate change and drought.

Graeme Garner – Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania (ALCT) manager. In the hills of Tasmania’s Southern Midlands a property owner is seeing her land through the eyes of its first inhabitants. Walking along beside her is Graeme Garner manager of the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania pointing out the significant areas of Indigenous occupation. Graeme was contacted curious on what the land return process was back to the traditional owners. It comes in the wake of the Teniswood family’s return of half their east coast property in February, a move widely considered the first private return in Tasmania’s history.

Dr Jodi Rowley – Australian Museum and Curator of Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Biology. The Australian Museum (AM) is calling on all Australians to help find our nation’s missing frogs during this year’s FrogID Week, 8-17 November 2019. FrogID Week is an Australian Museum citizen science project, aimed at collecting audio of frog calls across the nation – at a moment in time – to monitor frog populations and help save Australia’s threatened frog species.
